Going for the Gold

Olympic athletes are weighing their medals on a simple balance scale. There are only 4 weights available; 1, 3, 9 & 27 lbs. How do the athletes place the weights to figure out the different weights of the various medals? The gold medal weighed 32 lbs, the silver metal weighed 25lbs and the bronze metal weighed 20 lbs.
