The Locker Room . . .

There are 1000 lockers number 1 to 1000. You open all the lockers, then close every other locker. Then, for every 3rd locker, you close each opened locker and open each closed locker. You follow the same pattern for every 4th locker, every 5th locker, and so on. Which lockers will be open? Why?
