If the World was a Village

If the World was a Village by David Smith is a great children’s book that can be used at all grade levels. It takes the world population of 6 billion and reduces it down to 100 people. What would the village be like? 22 people would speak a Chinese dialect, 20 would earn less than a dollar a day, 17 cannot read or write, 60 are always hungry and 24 have a television in their homes.

Have a class of students take their own survey of their school or community and condense it down to 100 people by doing ratios or percentages or for younger grades just guessing if it more than half or less than half of the group.
